okay squirrel 101 there are many types of squirrels...Grey and red being the more common but up here in canada we also have black and white squirrels. Black squirrels are mainly only seen in Letchworth Garden City which is in Hertfordshire, England, I'm not sure where they came from originally but they aren't seen in any other surrounding parts.
I saw nothing but black squirrels with red tales in New Rochelle New York. They were very common up there. Never saw them anywhere else.
Wikipedia says there are some in Wisconsin and some other places in the North.

In most of the lower 48 states it is caused by genetics, just as white ones or albinos are, just nature at it's best

i have a black and brown one who come to my garden all the time. yes black squirels exist. in morocco we have chesnut brown ones
black squirrels are a a melanistic form of the grey variety -they are unusual in United Kingdom but at least one cluster of them is known in Cambridgeshire. I saw several whilst on holiday in Bulgaria
I saw them a couple of times when I went on a trip to Western Canada.
