Is There Such Thing As Black Squirrels?

I've been arguing with someone that says it's not possible, but I saw one [And have it filmed] in Central Park. So was it just a mutation or something?Is There Such Thing As Black Squirrels?

Sure are. They can be melanistic gray squirrels (Sciuris carolinensis, which have a mutation that makes their follicles to produce more pigment to put into the hair, and some fox squirrels (Sciuris niger) are quite dark colored. You probably saw the former. There are also white and albino gray squirrels.
yes, i live in wisconsin and theyre all over, i know a few people who came from different areas of the country to her and they were amazed with the black squirrels, apparently they didnt know of their existence either

Well like the first guy said its just a phase of the Eastern grey Squirrel at least thats what I remember from Zoology class.

They're quite common in the north Bronx. Maybe it took the subway to visit a friend in the zoo.
