Why do squirrels in different places have differing coloring ?? Ex. USA EAST - GREY, Canada - black?

In Council Bluffs Iowa they have 3 kinds. Black Grey and red. In Minnesota they have flying squirrels. It is just where they have been introduced into those areas and have thrived. Squirrels can't buy airline or bus tickets to travel so they are where they are unless humans intervene and move them which they do from time to time. That's how the black squirrel got to Iowa. Why do squirrels in different places have differing coloring ?? Ex. USA EAST - GREY, Canada - black?
Because there are different species all over North America, end their areas overlap given you the sense they are just a single species. There are local color patterns in different areas, and changes due to evolutive reasons, giving some individuals advantages over neighbors with a color not so well suited. Why do squirrels in different places have differing coloring ?? Ex. USA EAST - GREY, Canada - black?
There are different species of squirrels. The ones where I live are gray and there are some that are brown.
I grew up in southern ontario and the Eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) has two color phases there, grey and black (same species, just different coat colors). It has a wide distribution in the east of NA.

http://www.unity.edu/webdesign/tmorgan/s鈥?/a>

The eastern fox squirrel (Sciurus niger) also has a broad distribution in the east.

http://www.discoverlife.org/nh/tx/Verteb鈥?/a>

It is more brown in color, and at least where I am in Texas is smaller than the grey squirrels in Ontario, but that may just be a latitude difference. I have not seen grey squirrels here, apparently they are more common in east Texas.

In terms of why there is the color polymorphism in the eastern grey squirrel, I have never seen a study that tried to explain it, though I haven't looked carefully (try google scholar). I don't think it causes nonrandom mating (grey with grey, etc) but I may be wrong about that. There may be a selective difference that varies over geographical area.
Evolution! I am not positive that the squirrels in different areas of the country are actually different species, as many species of animals like the ';grey'; squirrel have been misnamed before. Humans have many different hair colors, but we are all the same species. However, you see certain combinations in certain environments as a result of natural selection. Very fair-skinned people in Africa or the Middle East would be susceptible to sunburns and skin cancer, and might even be easier to spot against dark sand and dirt. Therefore, you see fair-skinned Scandinavians, dark-skinned Middle Easterners, and almost black-skinned Africans. The very homogenous look that Asians have is largely due to geographic isolation (ie Japan).

Evolution drives variation different ways. For example, in the eastern US any squirrels that are black might be immediately more noticeable to predators and the black coloration is therefore evolutionarily less favorable. Perhaps the same is true for grey squirrels in Canada. Or, to make things even more compliated, maybe there's genes linked to coat color. Even if grey squirrels are EASIER for predators to spot than black squirrels, they may still dominate an area. Maybe certain immunities are associated with being grey. Let's say grey squirrels are resistant to parasite or disease X, and disease X is present in the eastern US. Grey squirrels will therefore be infected less and could have more grey offspring than black squirrels have black offspring (disease often lowers reproductive output). However, in Canada, this disease may not be present, so the advantages conferred by not being seen by predators outweighs the lack of immunity.

Evolution and genetics is an endlessly fascinating (and complex) subject. To me at least! :)
Many things can influence different coloring in types of squirrels, such as geographic isolation, or the environment in witch they live in. Coloration may also assist in attracting a mate??? I'm no expert, but I know a little bit about them.
Probably has something to do with the color of their surrounding environment. They would evolve different fur colors to blend in.

Squirrels which one is native to north America black or grey and what about colour perception.?

There are many squirrels native to North America. It depends upon where you live. The eastern grey squirrel can be black as can the red squirrel. Never saw a black fox squirrel though. I did see some black Abert's squirrels that looked as big as a cat to me.

Squirrels world wide 365 species.

http://www.squirrels.org/names.htmlSquirrels which one is native to north America black or grey and what about colour perception.?
Squirrels have various color phases, some populations have a dominance of one color phase, but they are all the same species. The common name is eastern gray squirrel, the scientific name is Sciurus carolinensis, many people drop the eastern part of the common name. They have been native to North America for 37 million years.

I don't understand what you mean by color perception. You mean the color phases or the animals vision.Squirrels which one is native to north America black or grey and what about colour perception.?
They do perceive color.

  • In a hypothetical population of squirrels, the dominant fur color is black. A recessive allele for....?

grey fur color occurs with a frequency of 0.3. what is the frequency of the domiant allele?

    a. 0.09

    b. 0.42

    c. 0.49

    d. 0.70In a hypothetical population of squirrels, the dominant fur color is black. A recessive allele for....?
    q = 0.3

    q + p = 1.0. So p,frequency of dominant allele is 0.7.

Can black or grey wild squirrels mate and produce offspring with hampsters? maybe cavies??

are the genetics the same ? i saw a cat and a rabbit have a (cabbit).....there was a picture in our newspaper of a cat that gave birth to 3 kittens and 3 puppys! ';boweowwwCan black or grey wild squirrels mate and produce offspring with hampsters? maybe cavies??
zebras and horses are closely related. female Llamas and males camels can breed (not the other way around though) and produce a hybrid. A cat and a rabbit and a cat and a dog can mate, but can not have viable offspring. You may be thinking of the breed of cat that has extra short front legs- which makes them hop like a rabbit- I think the breed started in Canada. It is basically an outcropping from making the munchkin breed

Black and gray squirrels are the same species- black is a melanistic phase and dominant over grey- but (to put it simply)grey squirrels don't see the black or blonde squirrels as attractive, so it keeps the black or blonde population of gray squirrels down.

For one thing- cavies are not found where grey squirrels are found (they are in mostly S. America) and the genetics are way too different to be able to breed them to a hamster or cavie. Can black or grey wild squirrels mate and produce offspring with hampsters? maybe cavies??
All of these animals have different genetic makeups and number of chromosomes...they are not the same species and would never produce viable offspring. That cabbit has to be a freak of nature due to a birth defect and someone played it up in the news....you've seen old carnivals with malformed people put up for viewing as sideshow freaks...this cabbit must be the same or else a great computer fused photo!!! Sorry.....
No, genetics not only say squirel/hamster hybrids would be impossible, so are cabbits and a cat having puppies. Flat out, right down to it, species don't mix, and subspecies don't mix well.

Rabbits are not feline, so that makes that impossible. Cats are not canine, also impossible. Squirels and hamsters are both rodents, but in the sense as an african lion is in the same category as the house cat I have sleeping on my bed right now. Not only would the squirel kill the hamster, but any mating that took place would bear no fruit. Sorry, your paper runs lies. Are you sure you aren't looking at a tabloid?
no they can't, they are two different species. the cat %26amp; rabbit must have been concieved in a petrie dish.

The little sluts. Must be something in the drinking water. Got to be that. With female grey squirrels preferring black mates - I joke not - are they copying female human behaviour?
If the Grey Squirrel is mating with black squirrels oh well but in regards to white women being with black men, they are just whores and will eventually be wiped out, hopefully by one of my many weapons.
I think even squirrels can appreciate more aggressive sexual behavior! It is not the colour that is attracting them, it is the higher testosterone levels!
good glad the new black squirrels are taking over the grey, just like the american grey coming over and taking over our red sqirrels, fuc*ing americans

Squirrel cage blower (old, from home heating system) has 4 wires, red, orange, brn, black. how to wire for use?

The color code is a little bit odd.

    Sounds like a multispeed motor.

Black is usually high speed, red is usually low speed.

Normally a white would be neutral, but you don't mention white.

Orange and brown may be wires for a capacitor.

The best thing to do is look at the motor nameplate, it may be covered by the belly band mounting but should show the correct way to wire and what capacitor to use if it uses one.Squirrel cage blower (old, from home heating system) has 4 wires, red, orange, brn, black. how to wire for use?
take ohm readings between the wires.the windings are most likely wound in parallel. one set will run it on high (most likely red and black)

the orange and brown are to add another pole on the motor halving the speed and doubling the toque.

I have a question about black squirrels and their coats???

My neighborhood is full of oak trees and gray squirrels. Late last summer three black squirrels separately moved into/near my yard. Two were actually black;one was a dark charcoal. In mid-October one developed a bald saddle on the neck/shoulder area; it grew much larger over the next weeks; the tail hair thinned as the bald spots grew. The charcoal one went next, and then the last black one. The first one's entire coat turned a light gray. I suspected mange, and became concerned about the other squirrels and about my dogs, but figured that bald squirrels with short food supplies laid in would probably not survive the winter.

All three are alive and seem well today; all have full coats, although the charcoal and the light gray coats seem somewhat thinner than the still-black coat.

So, can anyone tell me what's going on? Is this normal for black squirrels? Ought I have concerns re mange and my dogs?

'preciate any info at all including where else to inquire.

    Thanks!

.I have a question about black squirrels and their coats???
    Mange is caused by mites.

The mites may be able to transfer so a good flea, tick, %26amp; mite preventive would help protect your dogs. The mites spread to others by contact with their host or with the host's nest or burrow sites.

http://www.dickbrewer.org/fox_squirrel.h鈥?/a>I have a question about black squirrels and their coats???
Fox squirrels are slightly smaller than gray squirrels, red squirrels are smaller yet.

We have gray and Albino (pure white) in my area, black squirrels at my relatives not 10 miles away. They look all the same size. In my town, they are protecting the albinos.

Could be a form of flea or lice.
While black squirrels are most often fox squirrels (Sciurus niger), black squirrels can also be grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis). I recall seing a colony in the North Bronx (NYC) that had a high percentage of melanism. Mange or whatever it is is not, so far as I know, related to coat color in squirrels. Nor is it ';normal';.
it could be fleas or mange, yes. i would try to keep your dog away from any of the squirrels in your neiborhood. i wonder if the squirrels could be barbering each other?? it is very common for mice and rats to do it but i have no idea about squirrels... but it is just when one will groom another one in the same spot over and over until they have licked all the hair off in patches.

p.s. black squirrels are awesome, i have only seen one once ever in my life and i almost didn't believe it! lol.
There are two main types of squirrel, the 'grey' squirrel, and the 'fox' squirrel.

The fox squirrel, usually has a redish brown coat, but they have been reported to have black coats too. The fox squirrel is usually larger than a grey.

They both can carry some nasty stuff, but as long as you or the dogs don't eat them, you should be ok. Only eat the one's you hunt deep in the forest.

  • Rephrased, clarified question re black squirrels and their coats???

My South-Central Michigan neighborhood is full of oak trees and the locally predominant species: gray squirrels. In late summer three what are known here as black squirrels moved into my yard: larger than the tiny red squirrels, much smaller than grays, and considered more aggressive, tending to drive out grays as they move in.Two were actually black;one a dark charcoal. In October one developed a bald saddle on neck/shoulders which grew much larger; the tail hair thinned as bald spots grew. The charcoal went next, then the last black one. The first's remaining coat went pale gray. I suspected mange, and became concerned about other squirrels and my dogs, but figured that bald squirrels with short food supplies laid in would probably not survive winter.

Now all three have full coats; the two light coats look sparser than the black. I never knew mange just to reverse itself. Is this coat change normal for black squirrels? Sign of a disease dogs could get? Something else?

Thanks!Rephrased, clarified question re black squirrels and their coats???
There are four species of squirrels in Michigan - gray, red, fox and flying. What you are describing is the melanistic form of the gray squirrel.

Black squirrels are not a separate species from gray squirrels. They are simply hypermelanistic individuals of the gray squirrel species. This means that they have more pigment than normal individuals. It is the most common mutation affecting gray squirrels.

Notoedric mange has been reported in your area in both fox squirrels (which may be your large species) and gray squirrels. This type of mange often spontaneously disappears if the affected animals survive long enough (see the web page below for lots more information)

    http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153鈥?/a>

Dogs can contract this type of mange, but it is relatively easy to cure with ivermectins. Your dogs would probably need very close contact with the squirrels to contract the disease, and you should prevent this (not least because squirrels can carry a lot of other diseases).

    Black Squirrels, need help!!?

I live in Iowa, and we have black squirrels everywhere. From my understanding they are protected. Last night while trying to sleep, I hear weird noises and can not figure out what it is. I wake up, and leave for work, and see insulation all over my yard. They have tore the siding off my under roof, and made their way into my attack. I can hear them running around now as I speak. I have lived in my house for 5 years now and have NEVER had any such problem. Any advice on what to do, or the cost etc? Thank you in advance.Black Squirrels, need help!!?
Call your local animal control and get some advice. Black squirrels are a form of grey squirrel and not protected as far as I know. What you'll probably need to do is trap them and drive them several miles away before you let them go. You'll need to repair the siding and close up the hole that they got into. I had a starling tear apart my eaves and had to staple heavy metal screen over the holes to get him to stay out. It was a pain in the behind!Black Squirrels, need help!!?
they are a form of gray squirrell i shoot them all the time call the animal control

    Orgin of black squirrels?

Squirrel color has natural variations in shade from light to black; check out a squirrel you can see all the colors. Black fur likely is a recessive trait. It would take two squirrels with the recessive gene to mate (each squirrel would have two fur color genes), then the offspring would to have both fur genes to be for black fur in order to actually have black fur. This characteristic usually may be naturally adventageous to have for survival in some areas. For example a dark forest they'd be less likely to be spotted and therefore less likely that a predator would eat them for dinner. If that environment made survival more likely if a squirrel has black fur a lot of the time then, over time, more black furred squirrels would survive and thus have more black fur baby squirrels. Over time black fur would be in the majority. As the environment change it would stop being an advantage so either a fur color with more advantage would dominate, or if there was no survival preference on fur color then it would be a mix with black fur in the minority. Most places squirrels hang out at, under trees and in parks, have dappled light and you will see that most squirrels are gray and may have a little black fur mixed in.....so in dappled light they are less likely to get eaten.Orgin of black squirrels?
Black squirrels and white squirrels are color forms

of the normal-colored species. They are most

likely to occur in squirrel populations that are some

what isolated from other squirrels, as in city parks.

This isolation leads to inbreeding of the population

increasing the likelihood that recessive genes for

black or white color pattern will be brought together. Black seems to be much more common

in such populations than white. I have seen black

    squirrels in several different places.

    Black squirrels?

Are they melanistic gray squirrels or a subspecies?Black squirrels?
There are two species that could fit the bill. The species called the Easter fox squirrel bears the scientific name of Sciurus niger, literally black squirrel. However, the grey squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis has melanistic individuals, which form the majority of some populations (as in the North Bronx). So the answer is that they could either be melanistic individuals or a separate SPECIES.Black squirrels?
most likely they're melanistic gray squirrels. Since they can outnumber gray squirrels in some areas and can form entire populations, some people say that they're a different species or subspecies. But they breed fine with regular gray squirrels, so they're the same.
Some are a whole different species.

  • Black squirrels in Toronto ... are they dangerous?

I was in Toronto last week and I saw lot鈥檚 of black squirrels and they looked scary! I live in San Francisco and most of the squirrels here are gray or red. My cousin who lives in Toronto said they can be really aggressive and even attack people and that the black squirrels keep the gray squirrels out of Toronto because they鈥榬e territorial ... is that true and are they really dangerous? Black squirrels in Toronto ... are they dangerous?
we have hundreds of black ones near our house and they act no different to any other squirrels

not dangerous at allBlack squirrels in Toronto ... are they dangerous?
Black squirrels are becoming more common in Canada than the gray variety, mainly because the black fur gives them a bigger advantage in the winter months. They can absorb more heat from the sun, making them less likely to freeze to death on really cold days.

Also, as your cousin mentioned, they tend to be a bit more territorial and aggressive, but usually this is directed towards other squirrels, not humans.

I have only ever heard of one case where a squirrel actually attacked a human, clawing and biting them. I believe that the victim was a Canada Post mailperson and it is suspected that they came too close to the squirrel's nest where it may have had its young.

I used to feed the squirrels peanuts in the shell in years past, and even had a squirrel sit on my chest and grab a peanut I was holding in my lips, so they are certainly not evil aggressive critters.

However, they can get a bit demanding if they are used to you feeding them. I had to stop feeding them at home when they started jumping onto my window ledge and hanging their little bodies spread-eagle from the wire screen waiting for us to give them food! A bit startling when you are not expecting it and suddenly something jumps up and on the window or door screen.
I have never been attacked nor threatened by a black squirrel. Nor heard any scary story about them.

Indeed most people are surprised when they see those black squirrels in Canada and I have heard that they drove the the grey and red ones away.

    Don't worry !!!

But I would be careful of the raccoons though..they are pretty fearless and dangerous as well as rabid.

@greenback ..........there are LOADS of black squirrels in my area and my backyard is full of them............they have never even approached me !!! I hope you are joking !
I do not live in Toronto but I have black squirrels in my area, they are just like any other squirrel. Don't bother them and they will not bother you. I am also familiar with the grays and the reds...they all want to be left alone and allowed to do their thing...they are harmless.
    LOL Too Funny

I feed squirrels by hand in some parks here and I NEVER had an aggressive reaction. Well Squirrels are squirrels so they fight with one another when they compete for food.

But Red, Grey or Black they re all the same.

I believe your cousins played a practical joke on you.

    LOL.

They're only aggressive if they're in areas where dumb people hand feed them so they aren't afraid of people.
they have never tried anything funny with me lol

    Black Squirrels in louisiana?

Im a big squirrel hunter but never seen one.. I wanna kill one but dont know where they are more common around here.. Does anyone knowBlack Squirrels in louisiana?
I've been hunting squirrels for over forty years here in Louisiana. I've never killed a black squirrel. I saw a couple in Honey Island once, a long time ago.

I grew up across from a pecan orchid, and gray squirrels were my daily fair for ages. Flying squirrel were common there too. (way too small to eat, and too cute too.)

I have relatives in Michigan, and see black squirrels at their feeders all the time. They get huge! I don't blame you for wanting one.

Good luck, and good hunting.Black Squirrels in louisiana?
The black squirrel of Louisiana is just a color phase that occurs on rare occasions in the fox squirrel population. When I would squirrel hunt on a regular basis, I would usually kill from 1- 3 black squirrels a year. There was one hunt in the Dewey Wills Wildlife Management area in central Louisiana that I killed 3 black squirrels in one hunt and saw a total of 5 altogether, but this was an oddity that occurred only once in many years of hunting. But when I lived farther south in the Covington area I also saw a few black squirrels when hunting. I have found that when you see or kill a black squirrel in an area of the woods, you will have a better chance of seeing one in that same area in later years. I would guess the genes were passed down in the genetic chain.Just keep hunting and sooner or later you will kill one. It's just that they only rarely show up and that makes it just a stroke of luck to kill one.
I have killed one many years ago in the basin, off of the I-10 whiskey bay exit, south of the interstate. (Probably 15 years, maybe more). Even when I hunted down there it was very rare to see a black squirrel. Maybe every other year.
Come North and West young man...
Very common in New England and Mid Atlantic states.
Thats probably a fox squirrel. Look in the piney woods areas.

Even the best professionals sometimes have trouble keeping them alive. Owning a pair is like a fulltime job! It's expensive, takes HOURS a day, and the poor things usually die very young. Also, buying one is very cruel since they need to live in groups to feel safe.An animal that looks like a squirrel/mouse/rabbit in the face with black stripe in face...?
    sounds like a sugar glider
    skunk??
Sounds like a sugar glider. The reason the cage is so large is because they like to sleep up high (in the wild, that would be tree tops). It is true that they are not the pet for everyone, and they are very time consuming. They require fresh fruits and vegetables daily, as well as protein. 75% fruits/veggies, 25% protein.

Doesnt sound all THAT hard right? I've had my 2 sugar gliders for 5 years now...5 years of cutting up fruits and veggies, and meats, and trying new things to give them variety...every night. Two 3 foot high cages because they're both male and when they hit puberty Angus chased Fergus around the cage and stressed him out for 2 days trying to mate with him...he felt the urge and well, Fergus was the only other sugar glider around! So they're ';neighbors'; now. I also put fleece around the cage to keep fruit from being spewed onto the walls...they spew when they eat.

Oh and you won't see or hear much of them until you turn the lights off to go to bed. It works for me because I work midnights and get home at 2am. Fergus is watching me type by the glow of the monitor right now, it's 3:35am and he's just getting up to eat and play.

They need a very tall cage, a sleep pouch attached near the top of the cage, wooden hidey houses, food bowls that cant be tipped over, an exercise wheel that is solid so their feet dont get caught, shelves and ropes to jump and play throughout the cage etc.

Yes they can bond to people...but it takes a lot of time and patience, and a few bite attempts before this happens...if it happens. Angus, in these 5 years, is still not used to people. I think the breeder sold him to me too young. He's stayed really small compared to Fergus, and he's somewhat aggressive. I put the food in very quickly!

They're very interesting and very neat pets...but I did a few months of research and reading, and bookmarking every website before I got them. It takes a very big committment ..and they live 10-15 years, so it's a long one as well. Do your research before getting them. This is a living breathing little creature that will depend on you knowing how to care for him properly.
    Sounds like a Sugar Glider.

Here is a picture of one: http://www.sugar-glider-rescue-railroad.鈥?/a>

Sounds like a chipmunk? or Gerbil or something.

I dont know we dont have either of those in Australia lol

  • Black and white animal? Looks like a large squirrel or weasel...?

This morning on my way to school, an animal ran out of the woods in front of my car, at first I thought it was a squirrel but as I got closer, I realized it was much larger. It really looked like a giant black and white squirrel.

I live in the Florida Panhandle and i did some research, and it looks like a mongoose or weasel, but I didn't see any of those in colors other than brown. It was just really odd.

It wasn't a fox, cause it looked nothing like a dog or cat.

It definitely was not a skunk or badger (sp?).

literally just looked like a huge squirrel.

I don't know why I'm so curious but I am.

If anyone could guess what it was that would be nice.

Thanks!Black and white animal? Looks like a large squirrel or weasel...?
-- Ermine/stoat: this is a weasel-like animal that changes colour in the fall. In the warmer months it has a dark coat but in the winter it turns white with black tips to blend in with snow. You said it had mixed black and white fur, so if it was an animal undergoing a fall colour change it might have been partway through. They live all over the US but I don't know if the Florida ones change colour at all (since you generally don't even get snow).

-- Wolverine: looks more like a small bear than a giant squirrel. They have dark fur with light fringes and bands that blend at the edges.

-- Porcupine: it's a large rodent, so it's related to squirrels. The quills are dark at the base but lighter on the ends, and it has a soft furry dark undercoat. A small porcupine might look like an absurdly large and clumsy squirrel.

The last link below has thumbnail pictures of most of the mammals in Florida, so you could scroll down until you see something that looks familiar.Black and white animal? Looks like a large squirrel or weasel...?
You can get opossums in Florida. Could it have been one of those?
    It's a skunk.

Does anyone know anything about all black squirrels with bright orange tails. I can find no info on them.?

My yard is filled with black squirrels and once in a while I get a grey one. The last few days two unusual squirrels have shown up. One with a fully orange tail and another with the end half orange. They have no other colours on them besides the black body and orange tail. I live in central Canada near the great lakes. Does anyone know anything about these animals or where I can get information on them? I have tried wikipedia and a general internet search with no luck. Thanks.Does anyone know anything about all black squirrels with bright orange tails. I can find no info on them.?
This is interesting. Gray squirrels come in all colors and combinations. They may be a cross of these colors but kind of doubt it. What I'm wondering is, are there melanistic forms of pine squirrels? I have never heard of one but anything is possible. A pine squirrel has a rust colored tail with black bands. Or are they a cross between a black gray squirrel and a pine squirrel or a fox squirrel? A cross such as that would be very rare. A female gray I have here has a lot of deep red color in her pelt and tail. Her mother was very red. Unusual for a gray squirrel in our area. Can you get good pics of these squirrels and send them to me? I would love to see these unusual squirrels of yours'.Does anyone know anything about all black squirrels with bright orange tails. Such a squirrel may have been seen near Princeton University, in New Jersey. It's apparently just a color morph. Here's some info from Princeton's archives:

    http://www.princeton.edu/~paw/archive_ol…

    ';Back in Black

Myth: Several years ago, deep in the bowels of one of Princeton's biology buildings, an inhumane and unnatural science experiment produced a breed of black squirrels. Some of the squirrels either escaped or were liberated by a zealous animal-rights group, and now these new über-squirrels are slowly taking over the campus.

Fact: Black squirrels may be ubiquitous at Princeton, but they are also perfectly natural. Black and gray squirrels are merely different color morphs of the same species, the eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). Populations of black squirrels appear naturally in other places in the Northeast, particularly in isolated populations such as those in city parks, and they have been around for a long time -- in 1655, David De Vries included squirrels ';black as pitch and gray'; in his list of the wild mammals of New Amsterdam. Princeton, however, may have its own special kind of squirrel. Henry Horn, a professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology -- and far too serious a man to pull paw's leg -- reports having seen in the area around McCosh Infirmary a hybrid form of the eastern gray squirrel with a black body and an orange tail.

    In fact, squirrels have been a bizarre obsession at Princeton for decades. In 1926, a student writer in paw noted that ';a depletion has been noticed in the supply of squirrels on our greens.'; Over the next 15 years, letter writers discussed various ways of boosting the population. One suggestion, apparently never carried out, called for the university to keep a stock of captive squirrels and periodically release them.';

Come to think of it, I have some more info from personal experience. I used to live in Port Huron, Michigan, where ordinary red squirrels are found, and just across the Bluewater Bridge, in Sarnia, was a population of black squirrels. The squirrels used to hitch rides across the bridge and interbreed, the most common off-color being charcoal grey. That could help to explain the black-and-orange squirrels you've seen.
';Black squirrels are not a separate species at all, but a melanistic morpheme, casually known to scientists as a “color morph,” a fairly rare genetic variation. In the Midwest, as far as has been determined, all of the black squirrels are actually morphs of the gray squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis.

Some black squirrels aren’t pure black, but have unpredictable patches of gray or white. Some have even been reported as having a black front half and gray hindquarters or other strange combinations.'; http://chicagowildernessmag.org/issues/s…

Interbreeding seems likely. I live in London (U.K.) and my local squirrels are black, grey, red, and combinations of grey and red mainly. They are mostly a lot smaller than the ones I've seen in Canada though!
Maybe it's a chirrel, half chipmunk, half squirrel

Can black squirrels mate with grey squirrels?

That is the problem with common names. black squirrels can be fox squirrels or grey squirrels depending on what region you are in.

In truth if the black squirrel you are talking about is a grey then yes. If it is a fox then no (at least not likely, there is the ocassional gray, fox hybrid).

PS. I just found out that grey squirrel can also be referred to as black squirrels, just goes to show that you can still learn something new.Can black squirrels mate with grey squirrels?
Yes, but there is a positive chance of a negative result !Can black squirrels mate with grey squirrels?
    Funny you should ask that!

Yesterday I saw a grey squirrel running along the road with a red head, so it looks like red and grey can breed.

Cant say I have ever seen a black squirrel?
    Sure, squirrels aren't prejudice.
Yes, they are the same species, same animal. The ';black'; squirrel is a color phase of the Gray squirrel. What's called a melanistic characteristic.

but would they really want to???

I dreamed 2 black cats, 2 black squirrels, 2 black hamsters on my path, what does that mean? ?

To see numbers in a dream is good luck. The animals in your dream represent financial affairs.

The color black is a little tricky as it darkens the picture a bit.

If you are considering some kind of financial dealings right now or in the near future, I would suggest you approach it with care. Do your homework first.

If you make a informed decision about your finances. your luck will be twofold. If you are careless with your decision, your troubles will be twofold.

The financial choice is yours to make so make it with careful thought.I dreamed 2 black cats, 2 black squirrels, 2 black hamsters on my path, what does that mean? ?
There is not enough detail here. There is a theme of black and that would depend on how you perceive that colour. Do you find it threatening or a void or emptiness, what do you think of when you hear the word. How do you see cats, squirrels and hamsters? Do you see cats as hunters, sneaky or independent? Do you see squirrels as squirrel or gatherers or hibernators? Do you see hamsters as prey, or caged. Dreams can have many interpretations but the interpretations start with how you see things and the way you perceive them and what they were doing.

Birdfeeder that doesn't allow squirrels or black birds?

Can anyone suggest a birdfeeder that prevents squirrels AND black birds from eating all the food? This is what my mother has asked for Christmas but I don't know if it exists. Thanks in advance!Birdfeeder that doesn't allow squirrels or black birds?
The best kind you can get that will keep out BOTH squirrels and blackbirds is the type of feeder that shuts off the seed supply when something somewhat heavy lands on it. I know an old lady who has one of those and the blackbirds leave it alone (mostly). There isn't one that keeps out ALL blackbirds unless you want to get the kind that lets only small birds (such as chickadees) in.

So, if your mom wants to feed birds such as cardinals too..get her this weighted kind of feeder. It will keep most blackbirds out and it will keep squirrels out..but as an extra preventative measure, you should get a pole and a squirrel baffle, because squirrels are tricky and can mess up your feeder if they get to it.

    http://www.buyabirdfeeder.com/birdcatfin鈥?/a>

http://www.lookerinc.com/productpages/ss鈥?/a>Birdfeeder that doesn't allow squirrels or black birds?
they have feeders that have a ledge on them that collapses when anything heavy lands on it (black birds, squirrels, etc.). I gave one to my grandfather for christmas last year but the squirrels have figured out how to sit on the top of the feeder and reach down for the food. So my point is they exist, but they don't really work.
a birdfeeder that allows only white birds ?
Try a tubular feeder. see link below!
If it's a BIRD feeder then why not feed ALL the birds? What's wrong with black birds???? And don't u think the squirrels need food too? Either feed everyone or don't feed anyone at all...
They do sell a feeder that keeps out squirrels, but blackbirds,i don't think so,Ive never seen one.
    http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_d鈥?/a>

This is what I use, and I havn't had a problem with it yet. However, I do live in California, therefore I have no idea what other critters your area is prone to. :)
If you only want to feed small birds, like chickadees and titmice, you can get a feeder in a cage that keeps out larger birds and squirrels. Try Wild Birds Unlimited or another one of the bird feeder stores. The feeders with the weighted ledges are ok, but squirrels are very smart and can figure them out.
There are lots for squirls, but the black birds are the hard part. Prevent the squirls with the feeder, but shoot the black birds. This will help. If you do not want to harm the birds, then forget about them and let them empty your suet and regular feeders.

P.S. They cannot feed at a NYJER seed feeder (finch feeder).
    they don't exist
They are readily available at the Home Depot and Lowe's. Most hardware stores have them as well. Most are not very expensive either.
    Thats discrimination.....
Usually there is a metal collar under the feeder that prevents squirrels from getting to the food. However, you must make sure that there is not any other tree or bush that the squirrel can jump off of onto the feeder. As far as the black birds, there is literally nothing you can do except establish another feeder just for them with their favorite seed so they wont bother with the other.

Are black squirrels more aggressive than gray squirrels?

Black squirrels have been responsible for forming gangs and beating up on gray squirrels on their way home from school, stealing their lunch nuts and messing them up. Authorities are powerless to deal with them, as their parents are well connected politically.

If they're anything like black people and gray people, then yes.Are black squirrels more aggressive than gray squirrels?
they tend to be less educated and often commit crime on other black squirells, its very sad
Yes. In fact, several decades ago an entire species of gray squirrel was taken for experimentation and a chemical called vibothrupolin was injected. This chemical caused their brains to deform and therefore they became more vicious than other squirrels since they mistrust other creatures.
    what????? no
    that's racist
Normally melanistic animals are usually more aggressive than other animals. Even in humans(scientist say) The black panther is way more aggressive than a regular panther. But animals with melanism are much more resistant to disease. For instance cats, A white cat is more susceptible to end up blind in old age than a black cat.

    ';Black squirrels are a melanistic subgroup of the eastern grey squirrel. They are common in Midwestern North America and, in some places, outnumber the grey squirrels by a ratio of about ten to one.';

They are not skunks but similar in appearance.

    ';The black squirrels of Kent are larger than typical grey squirrels,often nearing the size of the fox squirrel and easily mistaken for small skunks.';
Fox squirrels are either black or sometimes a white color. They live mainly in pines while the gray lives mainly in oaks, pecans, etc. They usually don't live and mingle with the grays.
I've herd of black squirrels but have never seen one but white squirrels I thank are in the gray family as well. Kenton TN had quite a few white ones running around years ago

Yes. They occur naturally in both fox and gray squirrels. The full black ones are usually referred to as a ';black morph';. There are also albinos in both species. When one is partially black or white, some refer to them as piebald, or ';pied'; for short. This term is used to describe this type of coloration in many animals.

Below is a link to some info, but it's on the gray squirrel, which more commonly has full black morphs.

The coloration does not come from a crossing of species, or even different subspecies. Rather, it is color variation within a species. Therefore, unless there is something else wrong, they are all going to be fertile.Half black half fox squirrel ?
In my area of Indiana, we have black squirrels, which I'm told are a variety of the gray species, as well as fox squirrels. We see what look to be a mix of the gray and black fairly often, and once in a while fox and black.

My guess is that the gray/black mixes are fertile, because they're basically just a mix of different ';races'; of gray squirrels, but the fox/gray or fox/black, being true hybrids, like a mule, are probably sterile.
Oh sure, I get them all the time on my land , here in Tennessee. I also have a bunch of squirrels that have white faces ( they are fox squirrels). There is a town in Illinois that is the home to all white squirrels, I it is Olney , Illinois.. . As far as I was always told it is the only place in America that has this type of squirrels.

    How rare are black squirrels?

There's one I keep seeing around my yard. And I've never seen one around here before, I'm in Central New York. How rare are black squirrels?
The black squirrel you are seeing is probably a gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). The color of gray squirrels can actually vary from almost white to completely black. The black ones are referred to as melanistic grey squirrels. Black grey squirrels are more common in some places than in others. Generally, the further north you go, the more often you see the black ones, until in parts of Canada the black ones actually outnumber the other colors. But they can occur anywhere in the gray squirrels range. I lived in Kent, Ohio for a while, where about two-thirds of the squirrels were either black or dark grey.

Fox squirrel (Scurrius niger) can also be melanistic. Both fox squirrels and gray squirrels would occur where you live, but fox squirrels would tend to be in wilder areas. How rare are black squirrels?
Never really considered it lol, But, Yes, so I hear they are somewhat rare. I think there's around 3 in my yard :)

Nah, didnt think so. Lol. To answer you question, I'll say yes...and no...'cause I dont know ROFL

How the heck did you become a TC. Im smarter than you LOOOOOOOLDo you think the black squirrels get along with the grey squirrels?
I'm not sure about the black and grey squirrels, but considering they all have families of similar color, I imagine it wouldn't much matter to them. Someones always got their back either way.

However, I used to have an albino squirrel that lived in my neighborhood when I was growing up. All of the squirrels hated it, and would chase it from tree to tree.

So I'm not sure about the black and grey.. but the albino's are most likely hated by all.Do you think the black squirrels get along with the grey squirrels?
    lolz, Beebo!

I'm sure they get along, but they're all owned by the Red Squirrels

    ooh..slavery, when will they learn!?

There's a brawl going down across the states everyday...squirrels killin' each other for some females and vise versa

    it's quite sad :(
In Ireland grey squirrels attack the native RED squirrels and kill 'em.

They ain't got much of a population left because of the grey bullies. %26gt;:(
for the most part.....they dont...the black squirrels are chaotic, power hungry nazis of the squirrel kingdom....the greys are most likey to be gun down and annihilated by their evil counter parts
Maybe they tag team against the flying squirrels? Or is it squirrels against chipmunks? In which case Alvin, Simeon and Theodore would definitely win.
    No.

    Never.

The black mutant squirrel has invaded the U.K. what should we do?

eat it, they`re very tastyThe black mutant squirrel has invaded the U.K. what should we do?
the black 'mutant' squirrel is simply a random mutation of the grey squirrel. This is caused when one baby squirrel is conceived and the DNA information was not fitted together in this region (colour of fur) effecting the pigment. This is completely normal in nature and happens regularly, causing the lovely variation of animals we have today.

This is completely harmless, tests have shown that the black squirrel is exactly the same as the grey squirrel but black, simple.

The should be let to roam just as the grey ones are, as they are pretty much are exactly the same. The black mutant squirrel has invaded the U.K. what should we do?
We should mix the red one with the black one, then that baby with they grey one, then that baby with the red one

And then that baby will be all good (:

  • Is There Such Thing As Black Squirrels?

I've been arguing with someone that says it's not possible, but I saw one [And have it filmed] in Central Park. So was it just a mutation or something? Is There Such Thing As Black Squirrels?
yeh there is black squirrels out there. Your not going mad lol

http://uk.images.search.yahoo.com/search鈥?/a>Is There Such Thing As Black Squirrels?
Sure are. They can be melanistic gray squirrels (Sciuris carolinensis, which have a mutation that makes their follicles to produce more pigment to put into the hair, and some fox squirrels (Sciuris niger) are quite dark colored. You probably saw the former. There are also white and albino gray squirrels.
yes, i live in wisconsin and theyre all over, i know a few people who came from different areas of the country to her and they were amazed with the black squirrels, apparently they didnt know of their existence either
Stef have a little faith and trust and a litle pixie dust and you can fly away back to never never land. You can fly! you can fly! you can.............. flyyyyy! What's the matter? nobody likes Peter Pan?
Well like the first guy said its just a phase of the Eastern grey Squirrel at least thats what I remember from Zoology class.

What are you doing filming a squirrel, did he do tricks? =P
They're quite common in the north Bronx. Maybe it took the subway to visit a friend in the zoo.
Yes there are such thing as black squirrels.
Lots of black squirrels in my neighborhood.
ya there is a lot of them

Brown and black baby squirrels in same nest?

I have a hollow tree in my yard which a squirrel has built a nest. The mother is a large brown squirrel. However now the babies are sticking their heads out of the holes in the tree and running around the outside of the holes and I see that their are 3 blacks ones and 1 brown one. How can this be?Brown and black baby squirrels in same nest?
    mixed genes from both parents.

the father is most probably black as well, so his colour was more dominant in those particular baby squirrels than in the single brown one

the mother's brown coloured gene was more dominant in the single brown baby squirrel than in the black ones.

    Questions about black squirrel (UK)?

    how did they get here

are they bigger then red and grey

    are they dangeours

    do they care harmfull dieseas

what should i do if i see oneQuestions about black squirrel (UK)?
First of all, black squirrels are simply a colour form of the grey squirrel. They're not a different species. For some reason natural selection seems to be favouring black individuals, but they are still grey squirrels.

Secondly, don't worry about rabies - we don't have the disease in the UK. Squirrels are not dangerous in themselves, but it's possible they could carry diseases such as leptospirosis, which other rodents such as rats and mice can carry. However, in order to be infected you have to get the animal's urine into your bloodstream via a cut or scratch, so I wouldn't be too worried about it.

You don't need to do anything in particular if you see a black squirrel. Just admire it as an interesting wild animal, and let it go about its business.Questions about black squirrel (UK)?
I've only heard about Black squirrels on TV, so I don't know much about them.

From what I have heard, they're taking territory from the Grey squirrel, which was a pest originally, so expect them to be more common.

I suspect that they'll just be the same as the Grey squirrels, only bigger, black and a bit more agressive to other squirrels.
Squirrels are only dangerous if you're a nut. :-) Well, if they have rabies, they could be dangerous. If you see one, take pictures of it or just watch it or give it some food. If it's acting crazy and has a white froth around its mouth, leave it alone--it might have rabies. We have black squirrels in the US and I think they're cute. How they got to the UK or the US, I don't know. Hooray for squirrels of all colors!

Has anyone seen black squirrels in New Jersey?

I saw a black squirrel in Central New Jersey on Friday. This is the first time I ever saw one. I live right by a park and there are thousands of squirrels, but this is the first time I saw a black squirel has anyone seen one in New Jersey? Should I tell someone? Are they danageruous?Has anyone seen black squirrels in New Jersey?
We have them here in Colorado, but they're a little different from yours -- see the site below.

I've seen plain ol' Fox Squirrels that are mutations of black, grey, and deep chestnut. Up Ute Pass, along the foot of Pikes Peak, they're various blacks / browns and have tuffed ears.Has anyone seen black squirrels in New Jersey?
I just saw one in Maryland too. They are not dangerous.
';Black squirrels'; may be any shade from dark gray to nearly jet black, often with a brownish tinge. They are through Pennsylvania, where I live and mostly in the north/central area. There is no reason to think that they are ';bad';. No more dangerous than any squirrel.

The black squirrel was seen in North London UK. Not canada or USA..WOW?

And no its not been sunbathing!! LOLThe black squirrel was seen in North London UK. Not canada or USA..WOW?
I live in a ravine area on the East side of Toronto. We have all different coloured squirrels here. There are brown squirrels, with grey ';guard'; hairs (longer, courser hair that protects the softer waterproof fur underneath). Some of them are real cute with cream coloured patches behind their ears. One even has a cream coloured saddle across it's shoulders.

Then there are the truly gray ones. These are usually the largest. The black ones are about 1/3 smaller than the grey ones. They actually look like runts compared to their bigger cousins.

And then the red squirrels are just ADORABLE! They are only half the size of the black ones, with tails that look like red bottle brushes (thin and spiky like them). And no, I'm not getting them confused with chipmunks, because those are half the size of the already small red squirrels, and have stripes down their sides to help with camouflage. The black squirrel was seen in North London UK. Not canada or USA..WOW?
I live in Texas and black squirrels are rare, but they are around.
    It's definitely a rat then!
There were no black squirrels in southeast Michigan until after the year 2000...and now the suburban Detroit area is riddled with them. Go figure.
I have seen them in Michigan. They are cute. What's the problem?
Yep..........answered someone elses question about this...check out the BBC website below!
i used to live in a different part of Canada and all we had were red or brown squirrels. Now I see them black, grey, black with red tails, etc. But I have never seen an all brown or all red one since I moved.
i've seen black squirelles in Minnesota, Georgia, Texas, and Albino squirells as well... so, there nothing special
Yes, its a grey squirrel, but its 'melanistic' (a different colour to what you'd expect.) There are also white squirrels and badgers. Its rare but not unheard of.
All we have in Ohio America are brown ones that clim ur trees and drop half eaten fruit and not even eaten fruit their a pain and make the dogs bark all the time. I guess they changed color from a type of new tree so they ken blend in better?

    How big are Black squirrels?

I have just read about Black squirrels. And wondered how big are they? I don't think my state has any, unfortunately. How big are Black squirrels?
The black is a gene carried by the ';red'; or ';fox'; squirrel family. just like the blonde ones. they are the same kind and will intermate with other fox squirrels of any color phase. I believe this gene is heriditary. I tend to see them frqeuntly in some areas I hunt and rarely in other.

But the basic answer is they are the same size as fox squirrels. How big are Black squirrels?
they are the size of a gray squirrel...a black squirrel is just a color mutated gray squirrel...
There are a lot of them in nyc. I would say they are a little smaller than the average brown squirrel, well thinner at least. But they are cute =)

Do black squirrels run around on your chimney and than do a dance on the roof?

    yea all the time.

just now I saw about 12 of them breakdancing up there. Then when they got tired they roasted their nuts by the chimneyDo black squirrels run around on your chimney and than do a dance on the roof?
The fact that those squirrels are black means that they have been running around inside the chimney and you should be thankful that the flute in the fireplace is closed when there is no fire, otherwise those squirrels would be dancing in your living room.

You better put a metal mash around the chimney opening so those critter cant get in and it will function as a spark arrestor too,(you should have that install in the first place).

Dont'wait till a squirrel decide to drop dead on the top of the fireplace, the smell will drive you out of the house.Do black squirrels run around on your chimney and than do a dance on the roof?
no only on special occasions, like winter.
no this is ireland and we dont have squirrels but hey that be good to see
The little bastards leave there empties around to.
if the other squirrel is playing hard to get then they chase them around the chimney and inf not they will dance on the roof.

Yes, They also dance on the deck.
They do when I stick a firework up their butt.

    Ever seen a black squirrel?

Whilst skiing at Serre Chevalier in the French Alps I saw what I would only describe as a black squirrel. This came out of the foliage in front of me and still to this day I continue to wonder whether it was a squirrel or not.Ever seen a black squirrel?
A black squirrel is one of nature’s great “gotcha” moments, as if something shaped like a squirrel couldn’t possibly be that color. Those who have never seen a black squirrel before often describe their first sighting as something magical. Some quite literally doubt their senses.Ever seen a black squirrel?
We've seen more and more black squirrels in Northern Indiana. I'm told they originated from Canada. They're pretty, but tend to take over the area they invade.
They are known as 'melanistic' squirrels - something to do with genetics and possibly interbreeding. The Botanical Gardens in Berlin has a number of them and they are are a very tame tourist attraction. Your eyes did not deceive you.

The only other possibility is that what you saw was a marmot - check out Google images to confirm this.
black rat with a wooly tail warmer on!!
Dont think ive seen a black one in my lifetime studies of coloured squirrels, I can positevely say though that in my lifetime, I have seen a ginger one and a lilac one, although im sceptical about the lilac one as it seemed as though someone had painted it, but it ran up a tree before I could confirm this...
    yeah
    yes we have seen them in Canada. Also have seen some in USA%26gt;
There are many around my place in Northern CA. They are simply dark brown in color vs. grey.
Come to Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire. They live here in abundance, The vermin!
YEP, I saw one in the QUAD at L.S.U. once.

We have both gray %26amp; fox squirrels. There is a melanistic phase of both.
yes, black squirrels are pretty common in Canada
I have only heard of red and grey squirrels. Bit of a sore point here in Scotland as the greys have over-run the red population and are spreading a virus which kills the red. The government have decided to introduce a culling policy on the greys to help the reds flourish.
Yep, David D is right. Go to Letchworth in Hertfordshire. It is the only place in England where you can see them living wild!
Probably just a big rat or a stoat of some kind.
Yes, there is one outside my window right now.

We have grey and black squirrels out here in Mountain View, California, USA.
Yea in the City, New York City, i've mostly seen them in the Bronx!
They are very common in Canada and the United States. These buggers are so numerous in the cities that many consider them pests, because they have a tendency of eating tulip bulbs and other plant seeds.
Only on one of Bill Oddies programmes on tv. I have seen a couple of white ones though. The white gene is in the population in sussex, but its an anti-survival colour and I think the local predators get them. They vanish after a few months.
no. i would like to see one but i never knew there was a black squirrel. have you?
I have seen black squirrels as well at white ones in southern Georgia and northern Florida.
    no
Yup!! there are lots in Canada.
Maybe it was a mutant skunk, born without his go-faster stripes????
I bet it was different and ugly, how strange! I wouldn't like to see one
One came down my chimney last week.
Yes i have seen black, black and white and even flying squirrel.they live in different parts or us.some are very nice looking black with white tail.I think they live around colorado...
    yes at night
Yes, the common gray squirrel of the United States sometimes occurs in a melanistic (black) phase. They are quite uncommon, but I have seen several.

  • How do you deal with small black squirrels making loud scratching noises?

For 4 nights - two or three small black squirrels have kept us up all night with their amazingly loud scratching and thumping noises. I am looking for a suggestion on how to deal with them. How do you deal with small black squirrels making loud scratching noises?
Once you figure out where they are coming from, you can take action:

If they are trapped in an area where you yourself can get at them, get on a pair of heavy-duty gloves and remove the obstruction that is blocking their way out without touching the squirrels. Then, make sure they can't get stuck again by blocking the space.

If they are outside (i.e. free), I personally suggest putting a wind chime near your house. Squirrels in particular hate the noise and will stay away from the area where the wind-chime is located. ;)

If you know they're trapped, but you can't free them without touching them, contact your local ASPCA office or wildlife preservation program; it's likely that they will send out a professional to get them out safely and without trauma. =)

Glad I could help! How do you deal with small black squirrels making loud scratching noises?
Oh, my gosh! I hope they are outside your house instead of inside. Where do you think the noises are coming from? I kept hearing scratching noises overhead at night. My son went all around the house, looking for a place where they could have entered the attic. Found a tiny opening clear around on the other side. He had to get up on a ladder to nail a board over the opening to keep them from getting in. We hoped none had been trapped inside, but apparently not; otherwise, there would have eventually been a terrible smell.

Is there such a thing as a black squirrel?

Black squirrels are a melanistic phase of the Eastern Grey Squirrel. They are common in northeastern North America, and in some places of europe, outnumber the grey squirrels by a ratio of about 10 to 1. They have also been found in the UK.Is there such a thing as a black squirrel?
yes. the first guy had the scientific answer. They are just all dark black squirrels. they taste the same as grays and reds.Is there such a thing as a black squirrel?
brad nailed it, but should give credit to Wikipedia, which he quoted verbatim in his answer.

My Cat Sam made friends with a black squirrel, should I interfere or let then do what they do, I don't want ..

the squirrel to bite Sam or give him dezecesMy Cat Sam made friends with a black squirrel, should I interfere or let then do what they do, I don't want ..
i'd be more worried about the risk of injury than disease - while any mammal CAN carry rabies, squirrels aren't high on the list of carriers. in fact, they're pretty darn low. (rabies is transmitted thru bites, and frankly, squirrels don't respond well to injury. if a squirrel is going to get bitten by something sick, it's not likely to live long enough to actually catch the disease.) most other diseases are species-specific, they don't cross over to another type of animal.

BUT squirrel bites are ferociously painful (i've been bitten when fostering orphans) and even if the squirrel is nice, it's still a wild animal and has the potential to do some real harm. i'd hate to see the kitty get hurt, so i'd probably limit their friendship to just being able to see each other thru the windows. My Cat Sam made friends with a black squirrel, should I interfere or let then do what they do, I don't want ..
that's cute. i don't think the squirrel will do anything to harm Sam since they are friends. And i don't think you would be able to keep them apart since you can't follow Sam when he's outside unless you lock him inside. He will see the squirrel if he wants to.

Let them be and if you ever feel that something is wrong or you notice a change in Sam's behavior then take him to the vet immediately. Check Sam's body for marks when he comes in from play time with squirrel.
Awwww, how cute! If the squirrel hasn't harmed your cat so far, he probably won't, and as long as your cat got shots, it should be fine. It's great that your cat made friends with a squirrel!
be careful that the squirrel doesnt have rabies. when they dont run away they usually are sick. have your cat checked by a vet.NOW
LOL I have heard it all! I am not sure what to suggest to u.I do know that some squirells can carry disease and rabies!! I think its totally awesome that ur cat has adopted a friend!LOL my cats never step outside. So if they seen a squirell they would prob freak or eat it.U could call ur local shleters and animal control and ask them how many animals have been found with rabies this year and in what areas.Id hate to know Sam got sick from his new play pal.But OMG id luv to see pics.
hes makeing freinds now to have fresh tender young squirrles later
thats cute!!!!!! don't break them apart! you cant really do anything anyway.
Wow tuff question and good point. Sounds harmless but the chances of rabies are high. Make sure your kitty has all his shots and he should be fine. Sounds like hes not a prejudice cat, loving all creatures. :^) Take lots of pics sounds cute, if it truly bothers you you can call someone to have the squirrel relocated. Good luck.

How come there are lots of black squirrels now?

Where I live we used to have a bunch of grey squirrels, then all of a sudden we have only black squirrels, I haven't seen a grey one in about a year and was just wondering where did all the new ones come from. I never seen a black squirrel until about a year about and since have seen nothing but them. How come there are lots of black squirrels now?
Where are you from? I'm from Pennsylvania and I saw my first black squirrel about 10 years ago. I though it was pretty neat because up until that time I had only seen grey or red squirrels. Anyway, A woman I worked with liked to hunt squirrels, she said that they were very rare in Pa but more common further north and in Canada.

How do you get rid of squirrel infestions in sheds that eat plastic, wood, pool equip.??? Mostly black ones.?

They also have been eating all the bark off the shrubs and trees and of course the trees then die. Help, I'm losing my whole backyard fence line. Have gutted 2 sheds, lost pool hoses to pump and have a dozen more shrubs to replace at $50 a head. How do you get rid of squirrel infestions in sheds that eat plastic, wood, pool equip.??? Mostly black ones.?
Take a whole bulb of garlic and a few very hot peppers. Run them in a blender with 2 cups of water. Let stand overnight. Strain mixture and add 2 more cups of water. Place liquid in a spray bottle and spray everything the little buggers have been chewing on (it won't hurt your shrubs and trees.) Spray again after a rain. This will keep for a week in refrigerator. This organic mixture can be used in your garden to keep bugs away, too.How do you get rid of squirrel infestions in sheds that eat plastic, wood, pool equip.??? Mostly black ones.?
I had a whippet growing up and they're bred to catch small game. No squirrels dared come into our yard.
Cyan pepper on what they are eating, they won't like that and it won't hurt the plants.
Sheds that eat plastic ?- wooooah - whatever medication your taking , Id give it a miss for a while . What you've probably seen is someone putting some pool equipment into the shed but just thought that the shed was eating it - the plastic and wood may have just been blowing around and gone through the shed door giving the illusion of the shed eating it . I honesty think the squirrel thing is the least of your problems .
Most cities will provide you with traps that wont hurt the little pests and they will pick them up after you catch them!!

    Happy hunting

no, it has nothing to do with leaving trees.

it is because of a genetic mutation causing an increased amount of black pigment in gray squirrels. the mutation is called melanism, it's the same thing that causes black panthers. kinda like albinism, but reversed...Why do we have black squirrel ?
Depending on where you live, black squirrels mostly live in the northern midwest. States like michigan, wisconsin, and parts of ohio. This is there natural color. Just like gray, red, and fox squirrels.
Black squirrels are really just gray squirrels of a different color. They're mainly found up north. It doesn't have to do with age- black squirrels are the same color their whole lives.

If a black cat crosses your path it is bad luck what if a squirrel crosses your path at your wedding promenade?

Is one doomed for a life of ';nuttiness';? Does one go crazy or is this just a sign that getting married is ';nuts'; ? If a black cat crosses your path it is bad luck what if a squirrel crosses your path at your wedding promenade?
A squirrel in your path represents the dizzying, mad existential ride to nowhere you are about to embark upon in the process of being married.
